Practice Summary.
David has practiced intellectual property law for over 25 years. He has extensive experience as both in-house and outside counsel with global manufacturing companies and major law firms. David’s practice focuses on multiple areas of intellectual property law including patent, trademark, copyright, trade secrets, trade dress, due diligence, litigation, and licensing of technology. He is experienced in patent and trademark prosecution and management of IP portfolios as well as advising R&D and business units with respect to complex legal and technical issues.
David has advised clients in the mechanical arts in various technical areas including aerospace, automotive, intermodal, stadium seating, and beverage bottling industries. He has led and managed multiple litigation matters including those involving jury trials in federal court. He has also managed a successful Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceeding before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
Additionally, David is experienced in advising senior executives on complex legal issues including, intellectual property law and development of strategies for the protection, enforcement, and implementation of intellectual property; IP rights related to commercial and government contracts, mergers and acquisitions; and risk mitigation associated with new product introduction including conducting product clearance and freedom-to-operate analysis with respect to competitor’s patents.
David has a BS degree in Naval Architecture from the United States Naval Academy, a MS degree from Purdue University and a law degree from The John Marshall Law School.
Prior to practicing law, David served as a Naval Aviator in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve where he flew the SH-3 Sea King helicopter and the C-131 and C-9 transport aircraft.
