Practice Summary.

Dr. Celander has over twenty years of experience as a practicing patent attorney and more than thirty-five years of experience in the patent field as an inventor. His inventive work started when he was a biophysics graduate student at Harvard University. Dr. Celander's personal academic mentor during graduate school was Professor William A. Haseltine, who founded several prominent biotechnology companies, including Human Genome Sciences Inc. After finishing his Ph.D. at Harvard, Dr. Celander studied as a postdoctoral associate with Professor Thomas R. Cech at the University of Colorado, who won the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry while Dr. Celander was there.

 

Following his twelve-year career in academic research and teaching at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Loyola University of Chicago, Dr. Celander became a patent attorney. He combines his legal expertise and advanced academic background to help inventors in universities and corporations with their patent prosecution and opinion work.

 

Dr. Celander has prosecuted hundreds of patent cases across a broad range of technologies. Representative areas of Dr. Celander's proven prosecution experience include biochemistry, biopolymers, biotechnology, business methods, cell biology and therapeutics, chemistry, consumer electronics, drug delivery systems, foods and edible products, fuel cell technologies, green technologies, herbal products and processes, kitchen products, medical diagnostics, molecular medicine, nanotechnology, nucleic acid technologies, pharmaceutics, polymer chemistry, proteomics, semiconductors, software and internet technologies, stem cells and regenerative medicine therapeutics, CRISPR technologies, and washing and drying technologies.

 

Dr. Celander has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and molecular medicine fields, offering expert opinions on Hatch-Waxman certifications, compounds, formulations, pharmaceutical processes, medical devices, and regenerative medicine therapies. He has participated in numerous due diligence projects related to in-licensing deals as well as mergers and acquisitions.

 

Dr. Celander also handles trademark opinion and prosecution work for corporate and university clients. His trademark practice includes conducting trademark searches, clearance and infringement opinions, registration processes, oppositions, maintenance, and protection. He also advises clients on best practices in the trademark field, including brand development, opposition proceedings, unfair competition, and enforcement strategies.

 

Before joining Klintworth and Rozenblat IP, Dr. Celander was with the law firms of Dentons and Loeb & Loeb.
